Questions & Answers
Is Elite Alpine SX appropriate for my child?
Yes, more than ever. We have programs for every level of skier, from beginners who are linking turns right up to competitive FIS athletes and Adults.
What if my child doesn’t want to compete?
That's okay, as not every child has the desire to compete. Elite Alpine SX will have coaches available at Laurentian for training when out of town races are scheduled.
Where is training?
Training will be mainly out of Laurentian Ski Hill in North Bay Ontario with scheduled training/races at other Local and Ontario ski resorts. All travelling is optional and not mandatory. Elite Alpine SX will always have coaches available at Laurentian for training when out of town races are scheduled.
What are the volunteer requirements for parents?
Elite Alpine SX is a non-profit organization and does require some volunteer support. Here are some ideas: fundraising, canvasing for corporate sponsors, on-hill course crew (guided by coaches), etc.
If you can not volunteer, or feel you have no experience on hill to contribute, there are other ways that you can help support our program which can be discussed.
Is there a problem if my child cannot attend every day?
No, we do advise that your child attends as many days and evenings as possible, so that they may learn as quickly as possible. However, we are aware that there will be circumstances that arise from time to time. We do not refund or bank for any missed days. Please note any days cancelled by Elite Alpine SX and/or coaches due to hill conditions or inclement weather etc... will be made up at the end of the regular season if possible.
How do you handle injuries and safety concerns?
The coaches will work closely with the hill’s ski patrols to assess injuries to athletes. When an athlete is injured, coaches have phone numbers for parents and/or guardians and will contact them to let them know what has occurred and what are the next steps.
Can I drop my child off at the hill and leave?
You can drop off your child at the hill, but you will need to let the coaches know that you are leaving and ensure they have correct contact information If needed. You will also have to give your child clear instructions about where they are to meet you after the day or evening session is completed.
What type of equipment does my child need?
Your child needs appropriate skis, bindings and boots. Our coaches are available for consultation to determine the best equipment for your child. Hard ear helmets are mandatory. Your child or young adult will not be allowed to participate without a proper approved helmet.
Northern Ontario can vary greatly in temperature. Always send participants in a warm jacket, snow pants, a couple pairs of mittens or gloves, face warmer, and goggles. Send your child with a ski bag or backpack to hold hand warmers, fleeces and extra gloves etc...
Please make sure that your child has a hearty lunch (packed or bought), water and enough snacks to get them through the day. Remember, they will be on snow for 3 to 6 hours (or more) a session.
What happens with extreme weather days?
If there are days with extreme weather (cold, wind, etc.) Local ski facilities will contact coaches and let them know that the hill is shutting down. Coaches will email or call athletes to advise them of the shutdown.
Call the training facilities if you suspect they might shut down for the day due to weather. Coaches will often go to the hill to see weather conditions, but might not be able to reach athletes in the morning or before training.
Check your emails often on the days of bad weather!!! Missed days due to weather will be made up at the end the of season.
